about canada
"Canada" comes from the Huron and Iroquois word "Kanata" meaning "village" and is the second largest nation in the world spanning six time zones. A country blessed by stunning vistas from the majestic Rocky Mountains to the rugged Pacific and Atlantic Coastline and the untamed wilderness of the Arctic, Canada is also blessed with an abundance of natural resources- from fisheries to wheat fields, oil reserves to diamond mines.1/4th of the world's fresh water and 1/10th of the world's forests are in Canada.
Canada was first colonized by the French in the early 1600s. The European rivalries between France and England were unfortunately transported to the new land and bitter battles of division marked our early history as a nation. Britain emerged from the conflicts as the victor and Canada became an English colony in 1763. In 1867 after many years of discussions and negotiating between the regions in Canada and the British crown, the Dominion of Canada was born taking its name from Psalm 72:8 "He shall have dominion from sea to sea".
Today Canada is a bilingual (French and English) country of over 32 million people who embrace cultural diversity through an official policy of multiculturalism which protects and upholds the cultural values of origin of every Canadian.
